The crest on the glass door and the busy, colorful interior announce Bavarian eatery.
All salads come with pumpernickel and rye breads. A moment of doubt...Gnocchi and spinach salad sound suspiciously Italian.
But, the soup of the day is called Tagesuppe. Spaetzel, sauerkraut, potatoes, and red cabbage come with most main dishes. Six kinds of Schnitzel. German Sausages have their own menu section. Grandma’s cabbage rolls go by a Kraut Roulade alias. Beers’names are in German.
Uhah! Music, heavy on German polka, comes from the speakers. If Friday or Saturday, live accordion and tuba players get the beer mugs dancing in the outdoors patio called Bier Garten.
This might not be the chestnut trees cladded Munich Biergärten, but it’s as close as anyone can get to robust German meals with all the beer and musical trimmings without leaving Phoenix. This is chef Hoffman’s kitchen and castle, no phony
food chain.
